How it's calculated

  • X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y
  • X as % of Y = (X ÷ Y) × 100
  • % change = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100
  • % difference = |X − Y| ÷ ((X + Y) ÷ 2) × 100

Worked example

15% of 240 is 36.

Assumptions and limits

  • % change uses the absolute value of the starting number so a move from −50 to −25 reads as an increase.

Common questions

Is a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease back to the start?

No. 100 → 150 is +50%, but 150 → 75 is −50%. Each percentage is taken of a different base.

What's the difference between percentage change and percentage points?

Going from 4% to 5% is a change of 1 percentage point, but a 25% relative increase.
